Stepping Out

‘Stepping Out’ involved a conversation during a long walk which we took from the former site of the High Beech psychiatric hospital in Epping Forest, to the Maudsley Hospital in Denmark Hill, south London.

The podcast episode consisted of excerpts from a full recording of the walk, interwoven with a reading by Lizzy of a poem written about the walk. Using the poet John Clare’s residence at High Beech as a starting point, we discussed our own thoughts and feelings around what walking, and the start/end locations, mean to us.

To accompany the podcast episode we made a concertina book featuring Lizzy’s poem, typewritten by David. This was ‘bookended’ by photographs of the blue plaque about John Clare at Lippitt’s Hill and the main facade of the Maudsley Hospital. When folded the book was 120mm x 120mm. It unfolded to 120mm x 900mm.
